1912
MMXII
Nineteen Hundred Twelve was the year the Titanic sank, an operatic event that occurred in real life and that would become, eventually, the subject of many novels and films, including an opera which premiered in 2005. Caruso was singing the lead role in Samson et Dalila at the Met, and I imagine there were, tragically, a few empty seats that week the Titanic was scheduled to arrive in New York. The crown jewel of this year is, without doubt, Ravel's Daphnis et Chloë. In opera, Richard Strauss gives us the mythical Ariadne auf Naxos.

///O///O///O///O///O///

First of all, feast your ears on Seji Ozawa's interpretation of Ravel's Daphnis et Chloë. Lovely presentation on the video; hats off to the artist who put this together:

Mina's Italian version of the song is excellent and it works! I just wish that Mina would have taken a little more time between the stanzas and the refrain.
///O///O///O///O///O///
Here is the best version of the song on the web. Ute Kemper's English and German version. High quality and utterly "unembeddable", I am not worthy to copy it onto my blog. You can watch it on YouTube by following this link: Surabaya Johnny.

German Rock star Nina Hagen gives us a convincing version of the song and shows how multi-talented she is. Nina Hagen was in many ways, the German "Lady Gaga" of the Eighties. She was originally trained in opera.

Nineteen Hundred Thirty Three was the year of the delightful Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. So delightful, that "Peter's theme" has been designated as the official ringtone for my other half on my mobile phone! In opera, Richard Strauss gives us the beautiful Arabella.
